Flat Tire, Dead Battery, Locked Out: What the Road Service Plan Actually Covers
Every JellyCarts rental from March 1 through September 30 includes the Road Service Plan at $10 per rental day. Inside that window it isn't optional, and it isn't hidden — it's built into the all-in price we quote you. Rent in the fall shoulder — October 1 through the November 15 close of the season — and the plan becomes a true opt-in: same $10, same coverage, your call. Here's exactly what it is, what it isn't, and why we made it mandatory for the peak months instead of an upsell buried in the booking flow.
What it covers
If something goes wrong with the cart while you have it, on the island, you call and we come to you.
That covers the ordinary failures: a flat or a damaged tire, a battery that won't take a charge or a pack that's drained further than expected, a cart that won't start, a keyless-entry or lockout problem, and anything electrical that leaves you stopped. It also covers the swap — if the cart genuinely can't be fixed where it sits, we bring you a different one rather than ending your rental and handing you a refund for the unused days.
It also carries the annual Carolina Beach parking pass that lives on the vehicle, valid year-round including through the winter months. That pass isn't a seasonal sticker that lapses in the off-season; it's an annual permit tied to the cart, so every rental — a half-day in July or a month-to-month winter lease in January — parks in the Town of Carolina Beach's lots on the same terms.
What it is not: it is not insurance
This is the part that matters most, and the part most people get wrong.
The Road Service Plan is not an insurance product and does not function as one. North Carolina statute is genuinely restrictive about who may sell insurance and what a rental company may bundle into a rental agreement, and a roadside assistance plan is not a substitute for coverage. It does not cover your liability if you injure someone. It does not cover damage you cause to the cart. It does not cover damage to another vehicle or to property. It does not cover theft.
If you want to understand where coverage actually comes from on a rented LSV — and why your personal auto policy may or may not follow you into one — we wrote that up separately: does your insurance cover a rented golf cart. Read it before you assume you're covered, because the assumption is common and frequently wrong.
Why it's mandatory instead of an add-on
Two reasons, and neither of them is margin.
The first is operational. A dead cart on Lake Park Boulevard at 4 PM on a Saturday is a problem whether or not the renter bought a service plan. We're going to come get it either way — it's our vehicle, our fleet, our reputation, and leaving a family stranded on the side of the road to make a point about an unpurchased add-on is not a business we want to run. So the choice was never "cover it or don't." It was "price it honestly for everyone, or pretend it's optional and quietly recover the cost somewhere else."
The second is that all-in pricing is a principle here, not a marketing line. We would rather quote you one number that includes road service than advertise a lower number and then walk you through a menu of things you have to buy to make the rental function. Rental pricing in this category is full of that, and it's the single most common complaint renters have about the experience. A $10/day line that's in every quote from the start is more honest than a $10/day line you discover at pickup.
What "on-island" means
Service runs on Pleasure Island — Carolina Beach and Kure Beach. That's not an arbitrary boundary: a street-legal LSV can't legally cross Snow's Cut Bridge anyway, so the island is the operating envelope for the vehicle and the operating envelope for the service that backs it.
The contrast worth naming
Plenty of operators in this category run a "you're on your own" policy — you get the cart, and if it stops, that's your afternoon. Some will refund the unused portion, which is not the same thing as getting your day back. A fleet that can actually dispatch a replacement is a fleet with enough carts and enough staff to spare one, and that's a real structural difference, not a feature list difference.
