When to Book a Golf Cart Rental in Carolina Beach & Kure Beach
JellyCarts doesn't run seasonal pricing — the rate card is the same in June as it is in October. What does change across the March 15–November 15 season is availability, and that's the part worth planning around.
Peak summer (June–August): book ahead, no exceptions
This is when Pleasure Island is busiest, and it's also peak Atlantic hurricane season. Both things push the same direction: reserve your dates in advance rather than counting on a walk-up cart being available, especially for a Friday-through-Sunday stretch or a week tied to July 4th. Walk-up rentals do still happen in summer, but they're the least reliable way to guarantee a cart during the busiest stretch of the year.
This is also when advance half-day booking (Early Bird and Night Owl) actually pays for itself — anyone can lock a slot ahead of a specific date instead of hoping a walk-up cart is left. Slots are limited, so on a busy weekend a date may simply sell out.
Shoulder season (March 15–May, September–November 15): more flexibility, better odds walking up
Spring and fall carry real advantages that don't get talked about enough: fewer crowds, milder weather for driving around the island, and meaningfully better odds of a same-day walk-up cart being available without booking weeks out. If your travel dates are flexible, shoulder season is the easiest time to get a cart without advance planning — and it's still full LSV season, not a reduced-fleet period.
Hurricane season overlap (June–November): book normally, know the safety net
Hurricane season runs through most of the rental season, which sometimes gives people pause about booking a summer or fall trip at all. You don't need to avoid the season — you need to know the policy that protects you if a storm actually threatens your dates: free cancellation up to 24 hours before your rental starts. Storms on this coast are tracked days in advance, so a same-day surprise is rare, and the cancellation window is the actual tool for handling it, not avoiding travel altogether.
What actually differs season to season (beyond availability)
Range. Heat costs you battery. A pack that comfortably covers a day in April will deliver noticeably less on a 95-degree August afternoon with four adults aboard — that's chemistry, not a defect, and it's true of every electric vehicle on the island. It's one reason we run 200Ah packs rather than the 35–45 mile packs common in this market: the summer derate has somewhere to come from. In spring and fall you'll simply never think about range at all.
Parking and enforcement. Summer is when town lots fill, paid parking is enforced hardest, and finding a space near the boardwalk at 6 PM becomes its own small ordeal. The annual Carolina Beach parking pass that rides on every JellyCarts LSV matters most in exactly that stretch — and it's a year-round permit, so it's equally valid in February when nobody's competing for the space.
Ideal rental length. These shift by season more than people expect. In peak summer, book the longest block you'll actually use, because extending mid-trip is the thing most likely to be impossible — the cart you have is often already promised to someone. In shoulder season, the calendar has slack and extending is usually easy, so booking exactly what you need is lower-risk. And once you're at five nights, price the full week anyway — it costs less than the nights you'd otherwise book.
Outside the season entirely. The beach operating season runs March 15 to November 15. Outside it the model changes completely: the fleet moves to month-to-month terms — quoted individually for your dates. A month costs less than a single week does in season. If your trip is in that window, you're not booking a nightly rental — you're booking a term, and the whole calculation is different.
The short version
Book ahead for June–August, especially holiday weekends. Shoulder season (spring and fall) is the easiest time to walk up same-day. And regardless of when you go, the free 24-hour cancellation policy is there specifically so hurricane season doesn't have to change your plans.
